New Gallery seeking artists
Dear Friends:
I want to make you all aware of an issue that affect the health of the arts in SC. As you have probably heard, Gov. Sanford has vetoed many items in the budget.  I am forwarding information that you will be interested in and I urge you to contact your legislators immediately and urge them to override Gov. Sanford's Vetoes #32 and #105. The following information illustrates the impact these vetoes have on the arts:
Veto #32 - cuts $1,212,733;
·        Eliminates all state funds for grants, programs and services, and their related personnel - the core functions of the agency - and leaves state funds only for administration and fringes.
·        A loss of at least 16 of 23 Arts Commission staff positions
·        In FY 2010, the SCAC awarded $2.2 million in 340 grants to arts organizations, schools/districts, and artists in 41 counties
·        Grant dollars helped to support 2,322 full and part-time jobs, and 200+ teaching artists working in our schools

Veto #105 - cuts $250,000 in ARRA (stimulus) funds
To be invested through general operating support grants to preserve jobs in the arts sector (the primary intent of ARRA funds is to preserve jobs)

She has studied under several internationally renowned fiber artists and been juried into numerous national exhibits. Through her explorations in fabric manipulation, Susan hopes to convey a feeling of appreciation toward all things old and rustic as well as adorned and exotic.

The SC Artisans Center partnered with the City of Walterboro to place this ad inCarolina Living Magazine. The plan is to wage a campaign to encourage visitors to make Walterboro their stopping point for the day and the night.

The Antiques District, the Historical District and the Great Swamp are the other strong assets Walterboro has and by partnering with the other entities, we can showcase the community as a must see and stay!!

2009

A LOOK BACK:

We started the year with a few children's programs in conjunction with the Colleton  Museum. The big kids had the most fun!

In May we hosted a folk-life festival as part of the
3rd Annual
Antiques, History & Arts Festival.

The Antique Tractor Parade continues to steal the show year after year.

Throughout the Spring and Summer the Center was visited by a number of tour groups.

"MR C."
Richard Crosby, affectionately called Mr. C. came to work in June 2009 through an program offered by the Federal Government. Dec 4th Mr. C. turned 91.

    Colonial Colleton
In Oct. the Center hosted a program, with the Colleton Museum, for children and their parents that highlighted types of crafts  from the Colonial days. (Though he is using a modern lathe, Gary made old fashion spinning tops that were later used for a spinning contest). All the children left the Center with their own top that they worked on.

November was a busy and very exciting month. A week after the
huge Anniversary celebration the Center orchestrated the first Annual Holiday FashionShow. Story in Section 2.

We finished the year as busy as ever, hosting 3 events in December. First, Ronnie Riddle came to our rescue and taught 120, 2nd graders how to carve snowmen  out of soap. He then entertained them with his harmonica.

During the Center's annual Holiday Open House, the Mayfield Garden Club held a clinic on making Holiday Wreaths.

 And finally, the
Leadership Colleton, Class of 2010 visited and was served lunch provided by the Center. After lunch the class was given a tour and some took the opportunity to do a little Christmas shopping.
Youth Leadership Colleton also visited the Center that dayand was given a tour.

1st Annual Holiday Fashion Show.

The idea to do a fashion show came along when Laurens Hall, the Center's Administrator, realized the need to showcase the Artisans Center as a source for one of a kind accessories. The response to the Holiday Fashion Show was wonderful. We were encouraged by all of the attendees to make the show an annual event.

The Center would also like to extend a special Thank You to:

This wonderful event, that promises to be one of the premier events in Walterboro, could not have happen without all of Frans tireless work.

WALTERBORO WORKING TO BECOME TOURIS DESTINATION.

The City of Walterboro started a tourism campaign about a year ago and adopted a tag line of

“The Front Porch of the Lowcountry”

The red rocker is the symbol that is intended to represent that slogan. We asked and received a red rocker designed by Katie Tillman, metal artist, to reflect the personality of the “Official Folk Art and Craft Center of South Carolina.”  We think Katie captured it perfectly and have chosen to include it on our new billboards.

Thank You, City of Walterboro and
