| | Health of the South Carolina Artisans Center As you know, we had to make some hard decisions this year because of the state of the economy. At the same time we have had some wonderful things happening and thought this newsletter would be a chance for you to see how hard we are working to keep the SC Artisans Center a strong and vital organization for artists, tourists and the state of South Carolina. We would be more than thrilled for our artists (and friends) to participate in any of these fun/fundraiser events - by either helping out or attending!
Education continues to be an important part of the Centers mission. We have some very vaulable partnerships with other organizations, none more important than the one we have with the Colleton Museum, which offers even our youngest children a chance to learn and be inspired by the possiblities of art. During a 2 day long field trip, these 2nd graders, pictured, learned a lot from one the most loyal supporters of the Center, Artist Ronnie Riddle. He taught them about carving, knife safety and just plain fun....as one group left a little boy looked up at me and said " This is the best day of my whole life, I will remember it forever"...folks, it doesn't get any better!
We also enterained/educated a group of 30 top notch highschool sophmores and juniors, members of "Youth Colleton" who are the future leaders of Colleton County. |
Holiday Juried Crafts Fair | | Georgette Sanders' magnificent work |
The SC Artisans Center hosted a Juried Holiday Crafts Fair on Nov. 18-19. This show was resurrected from the past, and judging by the number of visitors, it is going to take another year for it to be the show we hope it will be. Many of those who participated this year did very well while others did not have such a successful event. Thanks to all for being here. A plus for all of the artists was that they had a great time with each other, made new friends and lasting contacts in the art world of South Carolina. We are planning to utilize all possible advertising sources next year. We will continue to promote this Crafts Fair as a must for tourists and Colleton County locals. | | A potential artist for the Center in 2011 |

New Billboard - The Center has joined forces with the City of Walterboro to promote this area to visitors we are missing. this endeavor is being funded by the Walterboro Accommodations Tax Commission. The SC Artisans Center believes that by marketing the Center and Walterboro on Hwy 17N we will attract a whole new audience. Those tourists who are traveling to Charleston from Hilton Head, Sun City, Savannah, etc., in search of art, history and antiques , are leaving I-95 before they get a chance to learn about Walterboro through our billboard campaign. We also believe that with this new billboard campaign, these Charleston bound tourists will see our signs and have time to consider visiting Walterboro and the Center. We hope as they travel they will do one of two things. First, they will turn off and come to Walterboro or second, they will talk about Walterboro and will stop on their return trip. (On their return, they will see the Walterboro sign that already exists in Jacksonboro on 17S and it will further remind them that they want to visit.) A hardy thank you goes out to Charlie Jordan, one of our new photographers, for allowing the Center to use his art on this project. |
Suds and Sausage Suds and Sausage, a partnership with the Walterboro Criterium (Professional bike racing tour) was one of the most successful events the Center has had in several years. Turns out, people LOVE beer, who knew? Pearlstein Distributors supplied 5 different beers from New Belgium Brewing Company (home to Flat Tire Beer). The local Blarney Stone Pub donated beer from Germany, Ireland and Hawaii. The remainder of the beer was given by members of the Criterium Committee and the Center. In all there were 17 different brews. Bratwurst with all the fixings was served and the night could not have been more perfect....It is definitely slated to be an annual event. In the mean time we will once again partner with the Criterium on March 26 to co-host an Oyster Roast/ Chili Cook-off.....All you great chili chefs need to be practicing your famous dish in an attempt to claim the Best CHILI EVER prize!!!!
