About Us

The South Carolina Artisans Center’s mission is to interpret, market, preserve, and perpetuate the folk art and fine craftsmanship of South Carolina Artisans while creating a better understanding of our rich and diverse cultural heritage.

We invite you for a true Cultural Experience at the South Carolina Artisans Center where you can see, touch, smell, hear, and taste just what our state is all about…

Designated by our legislature as the Official South Carolina Folk Art and Craft Center, the retail gallery features the artwork of over 250 of South Carolina’s finest juried artists.

Every medium is represented: clay, metal, glass, wood, fiber and mixed media.

Extraordinary blown glass, stylish jewelry, quaint brooms, paintings, photography, and pottery are displayed in the setting of a campus of historic homes.

Sweet grass baskets, which are part of our Gullah heritage, and face jugs, which are among our indigenous crafts,  as well as a broad spectrum of contemporary crafts and two-dimensional art are featured.

Prices range from $3 to $15,000 for an astonishing variety.

Every 3rd Saturday Handmade: A Celebration of the Elements of Craft features live demonstrations by our artists.

The Pass-along Garden features heritage plants shared from our artists’ own gardens.  The Gullah Bottle Tree relates to early superstitions about spirits.

The South Carolina Artisans Center is open every day (except holidays) from 10am to 6pm and 1 pm-5pm on Sundays.

The setting is the historic lowcountry village of Walterboro, only 2 miles off I-95 (Exits #53 & #57) and just down the road from historic Charleston.

Center's history:

The SC Artisans Center was the brain-child of two of Walterboro's finest business women and another one from Columbia.

They had a love for the arts as well as a love of Walterboro, so they devised a way to merge both loves.

After a great deal of planning, the Center opened its doors in 1994. Since that time it has juried more the 700+  South Carolina Artisans.

The Center was named the"Official Folk Art and Craft Center" by then South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges in May 2000.

Currently, the Center represents 270+ South Carolina Artists.
